Manchester Academy - Manchester Manchester

Manchester is considered the capital of northern England. It is a contemporary, growing city of more than half million people with a proud, industrial heritage. Manchester has excellent transport connections to the rest of the UK and the world, including an international airport. It is a young city with three large universities and prides itself on being cosmopolitan and open with a great sense of humour.

Manchester’s gay district, The Gay Village, is no more than one square mile in size, but its importance and impact as a spiritual home for European “queer” culture is enormous. The district has grown since the late 1980s to become one of the most ebullient and exciting inner-city areas in the UK.

Situated along the industrial age-era Bridgewater Canal, between Princess Street and Aytoun Street, the Gay Village is now home to classy, glass-fronted bars and stylish restaurants. Its community vibe is enhanced by a series of gay-friendly businesses ranging from doctors to hairdressers and contained within its old warehouses and buildings are some of the most sought after luxury apartments in Manchester.

The Gay Village is also the home of Manchester Pride, Manchester’s internationally renowned flagship festival celebrating gay culture. With 10 sparkling days and nights of sports, arts, heritage, music, political activism and, of course, partying, it is the most colourful and flamboyant attraction Manchester has to offer.

Outside of the Village, Manchester is constantly evolving and the recent changes represent the “can-do” thinking of its residents. What was once the cornerstone of the industrial revolution is now a robust city full of charm, adventure and intrigue and whatever your reason for coming to this city, you’re guaranteed a very warm welcome.
